Facilitating the Future: STEM Voyagers at the Girls in ICT 2026 Bootcamp

STEM Voyagers was proud to serve as the lead facilitator for the Girls in ICT 2026 Bootcamp, delivered in partnership with Reach Out to Girls under the theme “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future.” The bootcamp brought together young girls from diverse backgrounds to explore the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in shaping opportunities for learning, innovation, and career development.

As facilitators, our focus was on delivering practical, engaging, and accessible sessions that moved beyond theory to real-world application. Participants were introduced to artificial intelligence and its use across various sectors, gaining a clearer understanding of how these technologies are transforming industries and creating new opportunities. A key emphasis throughout the sessions was helping participants understand how to effectively use AI tools for different tasks, reinforcing the importance of selecting the right tool based on the problem at hand.

A highlight of the bootcamp was the session led by Emmanuel Abiola, who guided participants through a wide range of AI tools and their practical applications. The session provided hands-on exposure to tools that support research, content creation, productivity, and problem-solving. By breaking down complex concepts into simple, relatable examples, the session enabled participants to build confidence in using AI tools in their academic and personal projects.

The bootcamp also included a dedicated session on prompt engineering, where participants learned how to interact effectively with AI systems to generate accurate and meaningful outputs. This was complemented by sessions on the use of AI in research, where participants explored how to identify credible academic sources, summarize research papers, and extract key insights using AI tools.

In addition to technical skills, the programme emphasized the ethical use of AI, particularly in academic writing. Participants engaged in discussions on academic integrity, responsible use of AI, and the importance of maintaining originality in their work. These conversations were critical in ensuring that participants develop a balanced approach to using technology—leveraging its benefits while understanding its limitations and responsibilities.

Throughout the bootcamp, participants actively engaged in discussions and group activities, including reflections on the impact of AI on the future of work. These interactions created a dynamic learning environment where participants were encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and share perspectives.
